- Landscape Installation - Single Family Residential
Designed by Thomas Kyle of TKL Design, and installed by the Great Canadian Landscaping Company, this project transformed a rugged, bedrock-dominated site into a natural, cohesive outdoor living space honouring its West Coast coastal setting. The installation required extensive technical coordination, including the careful blasting and reshaping of over 30 face feet of bedrock to create a new entertaining area, while preserving the site’s natural character. Solid stone risers were precisely integrated into the remaining bedrock, and all transitions were crafted to appear seamless and timeless.
Environmental stewardship guided both design and construction. Native, drought-tolerant, and site-appropriate plantings were installed to support biodiversity, reduce water use, and ensure long-term resilience. A permeable patio system, constructed on layered aggregates and finished with Romex grout, provides durability while allowing natural groundwater recharge and minimizing runoff.
At the heart of the space, Aker—a sculptural installation by David Spriggs—was carefully positioned during construction as a focal point and symbolic portal into the bedrock. Designed to be low maintenance, the completed landscape relies on resilient materials and plantings, allowing ongoing care to be limited to light, bi-weekly maintenance. The result is an environmentally responsible outdoor space that balances refined craftsmanship with ecological sensitivity and the artistry of the home’s mid-century modern architecture.
