Arbutus Retreat

This project transformed a dark, under-utilized landscape into a luminous extension of the home. Guided by a theme of refined naturalism, the design balances architectural structure with organic softness through layered planting, sculpted circulation, and integrated lighting. A covered outdoor room with a fireplace anchors the garden, while MOSO bamboo decking and basalt stone paving introduce warmth, texture, and durability.

Mature Japanese maples and existing vegetation were preserved to support habitat, shade, and site cooling. Planting emphasizes drought-tolerant, shade-adapted, and pollinator-friendly species arranged in layered compositions to promote biodiversity and reduce long-term maintenance. Sustainability is embedded throughout, with water-efficient irrigation, deep organic mulching, on-site stormwater management, and high-efficiency LED lighting.
