In 1980, Garfield Marshall and his wife Monika started Advance Orchard Co. Ltd in Grand Forks. The company was formed to grow commercial varieties of fruit trees for the Okanagan fruit growers, and also hardy deciduous varieties of fruit, shade and ornamental trees for the wholesale markets in the Prairies. The key driver behind the success of the company was to concentrate on consistent, high quality products that made the purchasers money. By 1991, the company ceased to produce commercial fruit trees in order to further expand and concentrate on the wholesale hardy ornamental tree markets that were so successful for the company.
In 2006, the business started the transition of ownership to Fred and Christine Elsaesser, with Garfield playing a working role in the company to this day.
Garfield serves on the Board as BCLNA’s Treasurer.
