The BCLNA recognizes a high standard of expertise in the landscape trade through the annual BC Landscape Awards of Excellence. These prestigious awards recognize the year’s best in creating exceptional gardens and honour the outstanding skill and workmanship of BC’s landscape professionals in various project categories, ranging from $5,000 to more than $120,000.
In late summer each year, landscape installation, maintenance and design firms submit their best projects of the season. These projects are evaluated against rigorous criteria by seven highly accredited judges who are selected from various sectors of the horticulture industry, including municipal/public gardens, nurseries, landscape companies, landscape architecture firms, educational institutions, garden communications and garden centres.
Landscape Installation, Single Family Residential - 18 Street
This project consisted of a complete back yard renovation. The existing landscape was overgrown, and falling apart. The entire yard was excavated. A large out-of-place cedar was removed, the patio was pulled up, rotten retaining walls were dissembled, and plants cut back. Blue Bear then installed a custom privacy screen which serves a dual purpose of hiding the garden shed. Two sitting areas, recycled slab retaining walls, fire pit, artificial turf, landscape lighting and planting were then all installed.

Landscape Installation, Single Family Residential - Tsawwas-Zen Retreat
Inspired by tranquillity and Zen design, this garden retreat was created to showcase the owners’ extensive bonsai collection and provide a space to feel immersed by—and grounded in— nature.
Considering functionality, we created walkways, access gates, and various sitting areas for different experiences within the space. Heights and grades were considered, so the inside flows seamlessly to the rear partially-covered viewing patio, meeting the ‘Zen’ style cedar decking/Bonsai platform.
An homage to Japanese elements of design, this playful, aesthetic, yet functional space offers the perfect way to relax and retreat within the footprint of their own home.

Landscape Installation, Single Family Residential - Stevens Reno
This is a typical lot in West Vancouver with a steep driveway in the front and no pedestrian walkway. In the back was an unusable steep rock wall and shady area. It was not very functional for the family to enjoy their backyard.
Our scope of work was a landscape renovation. We took consideration of the existing driveway slope and natural grades of the planting bed, created a central pedestrian walkway and stairs, and layered terrace with season planting. We extended the indoor entertainment room to the outdoor garden with a fire pit, composite deck and seating area.

Landscape Design - Lynn Valley
The vision for this space was a backyard with large entertainment possibilities. The modern / contemporary design became a beautiful compliment to the home, while checking off all items on the wish list. Stunning material choices, top end construction install methods, and a clever layout ensured this space will impress, and stand the test of time. A favorite design feature of the space is the layout of the pool, infinity wall, and fire table. Walking out the back door, you are instantly faced looking at the fire table, over the beautiful negative edge, and across to the pool lounge chairs. Every angle from this space showcases beautifully. This project became a top contender for our portfolio at Calumma Professional photography, soon to come.
